Privacy
Bible Lantern keeps what you write and where you are reading, so that it is there when you come back. Nothing else, and never for anyone else.
What is kept, and why
- Without a profile, your notes, highlights, links, bookmarks and reading position stay in your browser (on the website) and are not sent to us. The chapters, maps, cross-references and engravings are fetched from our server as you read, like any web page.
- With a profile, we keep your email address, the name you give, a salted hash of your password (never the password itself), and your study: notes, highlights, comments, links, bookmarks, studies, themes, reading progress and the settings you choose. They are stored so that they follow you to every browser and device you sign in on.
- Sign-in sessions use one cookie, set only when you sign in, so that you stay signed in. It holds a random token, not your email or password.
- Server logs record requests (the address requested, the time, the status, and your network address) for a short period, to keep the service running and to spot abuse. They are not used to profile readers.
What is not done
- No advertising, no advertising identifiers, no sale or sharing of your data with anyone.
- No tracking across other sites or apps.
- The iPhone and iPad app contains no analytics and no third-party tracking code, apart from the publishers’ fair-use count when you read NIV, NKJV or NASB.
- Your notes and highlights are yours. We do not read them except where you ask for help with your account.
Services we rely on
- Hosting. The website is served by Vercel and the profile server runs on Railway. Your profile data lives on the Railway server.
- Cloudflare Turnstile checks that a sign-up comes from a person, not a script. It runs only on the sign-up form.
- Vercel Web Analytics counts page views on the website without cookies and without identifying you. It is not loaded inside the app.
- API.Bible supplies the NIV, NKJV and NASB text; when you read one of them, its fair-use script tells the publishers which chapters were shown, with no personal information, using a device and session id of its own.
- Optional translations. If you add your own API key for the ESV or NLT text, the passages you open are requested from that publisher’s service; the key is stored with your profile and used only for your requests.
- Maps. The map of places loads tiles from a map provider as you move it; that provider sees the usual request details, as with any map on the web.
Your choices
- Export everything in your profile at any time from the Profile dialog (a single file you can keep, or a vault for Obsidian).
- Delete your profile from the Profile dialog. Your profile and all of its study are removed from the server at once.
- Sign out everywhere ends every session on every device.
Children
Bible Lantern is suitable for all ages and collects nothing beyond what is described here. A profile is optional and asks only for an email address and a name.
